“I’m sorry for lying to you.”

In the last hour, I’ve learned that telling a man ‘don’t worry about it’ doesn’t work when they’re harboring a lot of guilt. I was stunned when Slade and Jett came into the room together. Even more surprising was learning that Jett is DEA and, just like Jackson, he’s been undercover for quite a while, trying to nail Kevin Vick.

“Jett, let it go. Really, it’s fine.”

“It’s not fine,” Jackson snarls.

I glance at Jackson, and if I didn’t know him, I’d probably be afraid of him. His jaw is clenched, his brown eyes reflect the light in such a way that makes them appear to be ringed in fire. It’s scary, yet comforting.

“Well,” I fold my hands on the table and lean forward. “Now what?”

“Now, it gets ugly.” Jett smiles to soften the words, but it makes them no less worrisome.

“How so?” I need to know what to be prepared for.

“Kevin Vick is behind bars. Luciano is in the wind, and while he wasn’t my target, it’s clear he’s equally vile, if not more so. Jack and I—”

Jackson pounds the table with a fist. “It’s Jackson.”

“Right, sorry.” Jett takes a deep breath. “Jackson and I need to spend some time comparing notes, reviewing the evidence we’ve managed to get while undercover, going over—”

“What would have happened if I hadn’t walked in when I did?” Jackson’s fury is verbally directed at Jett, but something seems off.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me.” Jackson stalks up to Jett and gets in his face. “If I hadn’t interrupted the night you had Katelyn tied to that chair, what the fuck would you have done? Would you have stopped what was happening? Would you have sat back like a pussy and watched her suffer? Would you have helped to end her life? Huh? What the fuck would you have done?!”

“First of all,” Jett stabs a finger into Jackson’s chest, and I hear Slade mumble ‘uh-oh’ under his breath. “This isn’t The White Lily and you don’t get to order me around here. We’re equals in this.”

“The hell we—”

“Second,” Jett continues as if Jackson hadn’t spoken. “We’ve both done things we aren’t proud of so don’t go getting all holier than thou on me. You know as well as I do that being undercover means doing things we aren’t proud of or that we wouldn’t do under normal circumstances. Banging waitresses ring a bell?”

Seconds tick by and just when I think Jackson’s going to let that comment slide, he draws his arm back and lands a blow to Jett’s face that has his head whipping to the side. I sit there, frozen in the chair, time seeming to stand still. Slade rushes to haul Jackson back and shoves him down into a chair. Jackson resists but not for long.

Jett swipes at the blood dribbling from the cut on his cheek. His chest is heaving, and for a minute, he looks like he’s going to launch himself at Jackson and pummel him. Instead, he controls his breathing and lets out a chuckle.
